The Pole of Inaccessibility

- May 26, 2009

Thanks to zbicyclist over at Truncated Thoughts I now am aware of yet another grand distinction held by my beloved native state of South Dakota. (For an earlier Dakota item, click here).

It turns out that South Dakota is home to the continental U.S.’s “pole of inaccessibility” — the place in the Lower 48 “that is the most challenging to reach owing to its remoteness from geographical features which could provide access.” In case you happen to be passing through The Land of Infinite Variety, the place in question is on the Pine Ridge Reservation. (The Truncated Thoughts item that’s linked above contains a clickable MapQuest map to help you find it.) Knock yourself trying to get there, but “The Monkey Cage” is not legally responsible for any fate that may befall you coming or going.
