Sources for Information on Protests in Egypt

Joshua A. Tucker - January 28, 2011

If you are just getting to work in the US and looking for additional information on “protests in Egypt”:http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/01/28/egypt.protests/index.html?hpt=T1&iref=BN1, here a few quick suggestions:

* “Al Jazeera English”:http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/ has a live, English-language stream of news with reporters all over Egypt, including live video of protests. I’m actually watching tear-gas canisters being fired at protesters live.

* I found out about the Al Jazeera feed from searching on Twitter for “#Egypt”:http://twitter.com/#!/search/%23Egypt. I am increasingly finding that Twitter is the best place to get information about in progress political events, although of course you have to accept that the quality of the information there varies widely.

* I also recommend “Marc Lynch’s blog at Foreign Policy”:http://lynch.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2011/01/26/will_the_arab_revolutions_spread. While not real time news reporting, Lynch is an area expert who is frequently providing insightful analysis. The blog format here is extremely effective, because it allows Lynch to take account of new developments in the way in a weekly column simply can not.

* The “BBC has a live news feed”:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698 going which looks like it is being updated every 5-10 minutes.

*******

Update: The Al Jazeera feed is really incredibly viewing – to put a twist on that old phrase, the revolution really is being streamed live. Two things they are reporting now. First, protesters are chanting “down with the regime”. Not “down with Mubarak” or even “down with the government”, but “down with the regime”. Second, they are reporting that in Suez, protesters have taken control of the main square, and that the police have fallen back. Actually, now they are describing the police presence in Suez as practically nonexistent.
