The U.S. attack on Venezuela earlier this month left a trail of uncertainty over the country’s future after Nicolás Maduro. But it also raised questions about power, foreign intervention, and the justification of violence in the international system.
To explore these questions, we bring you a new podcast: Chalkboard Politics. This is a student-produced, student-hosted podcast, designed to connect concepts that students encounter in the classroom with real-world events. The podcast is produced by the Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia University, and is made possible with the support of Columbia’s Department of Political Science and the School of International and Public Affairs.
In this first episode, the students interview two experts on Latin American politics and international relations: Sarah Zukerman Daly, associate professor of political science at Columbia, and a leading scholar on political violence, organized crime and post-conflict politics, studying how armed actors transition into political life after violence and war; and Eduardo Moncada, Claire Tow Associate Professor of Political Science at Barnard College, Columbia University, whose research focuses on crime, violence, and criminal governance in Latin America, specifically on the dynamics of illicit economies and the consequences of criminal violence on communities.
We hope you enjoy Chalkboard Politics and find it useful to connect the classroom to the real world – just as Good Authority strives to do. We welcome your feedback and suggestions for future topics.
