The Supreme Court’s 1963 school prayer ruling finally has majority support

The politics of school prayer are changing – slowly.

The trend, from this General Social Survey question, shows just how long Americans opposed the Court’s decision in Engel v. Vitale. Only as of 2022 is there even bare majority support. It’s a fascinatingly slow shift, especially given the rapid decline in religious affiliation and the sharper increase in liberal attitudes on issues like same-sex marriage.
