Why did you have to bring up the Mets now?

- March 21, 2010

We at the Monkey Cage generally applaud the intersection of “baseball and politics”:http://www.henryfarrell.net/movabletype/mt-search.cgi?IncludeBlogs=75&search=baseball. However, as I have noted previously, being a “Mets fan is difficult”:https://themonkeycage.org/2009/08/are_the_mets_cursed.html. Thus I found the following – in “Politico’s coverage of the very latest”:http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0310:/34767.html in the health care reform odyssee – a particularly low blow:

bq. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) used a bullhorn to whip up the crowd in opposition to the health care bill and the Democratic leaders who are pursuing its enactment. They derisively chanted Pelosi’s first name, yelling “Nan-cy, Nan-cy, Nan-cy” in unison, as if attending a _New York Mets_ game (emphasis added).

Come on! Why a Mets game? King is from Iowa – why not an Iowa basketball game? Or a Cardinal’s game? Or – heaven forbid – a Yankees game. Just another example of the shameless mass media taking pot shots at an easy – and dare I say in this case totally unnecessary – target.

OK, now that I got that off my chest, I can get back to monitoring “Jose Reyes’s thyroid”:http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/joe_posnanski/03/10/jose.reyes/…
