There Is and There Are

- October 17, 2010

My most recent grammatical sin, discussed “earlier”:https://themonkeycage.org/2010/10/there_is_and_there_are.html, was to use “there is” + a plural subject in casual conversation. Of course, I should have checked Language Log before posting, but now that I’ve done so, I’ve discovered this:

bq. I’ll observe for now that it seems to be an old story to use “is” and “are” promiscuously in there-sentences with plural logical subjects.

Here’s the “entire post”:http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/002447.html.
