New Initiatives in Open-Access Research

- April 9, 2010

bq. Now two parallel efforts from the US government could see almost all federally funded research made available in free, publicly accessible repositories.

This is from a new article in _Nature_, and I thank Scott McClurg for the pointer. The article discusses different models of making research more accessible: an author-pays model (as at PLoS), new federal initiatives to require public availability (as noted above), and the Compact for Open-Access Publishing Equity. Naturally, the federal mandates are attracting opposition from some publishers, who fear that public availability will hurt their business. There is, of course, room for all kinds of models (traditional, open-access, and some hybrid).
