We often bemoan that journalists and public intellectuals fail to use (political science) research even when said research is directly relevant to their writings. Perhaps we should also more frequently single out journalists for praise when they successfully integrate academic research in their reporting. Kudos then to Adam Liptak for this morning’s front page article in the New York Times on the vagueness of US Supreme Court opinions. The article is a model for how to integrate data and cutting edge research in a piece that appeals to a broad audience. Kudos also to the NYT for including links in the on-line version of the article to non-gated versions of the research.
